The Heidi Hewes Chapter of the Woman’s Cancer Association held its 14th Annual Home for the Holidays Walk

1/11/2006

The Heidi Hewes Chapter of the Woman’s Cancer Association held its 14th Annual Home for the Holidays Walk on Sunday, December 11. The WCA raises money for cancer research at the University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the walk is a favorite holiday event every year. This year’s walk raised $25,393 in ticket sales, donations, and raffle ticket sales. Among the items donated for the raffle were a cruise, hotel stays and jewelry. Six Miami Shores houses built in the 1920s, 30s and 40s were on display, each with elegant new renovations and additions, and the Cushman Singers from Cushman Elementary School in Miami serenaded walkers with holiday carols outside. Each year, dozens of volunteers decorate the homes and serve as hosts and tour guides.

Heidi Hewes was diagnosed with melanoma as a high school student in Miami in 1970 and died at the age of 17. This chapter of the WCA honors her memory. The WCA was founded in the 1950s and now donates nearly $200,000 a year to fund cancer research at UM/Sylvester.
